CdM Well Represented in CERT Awards Ceremony
The second-annual State of CERT Dinner and Awards Banquet was held tonight, and four Corona del Mar residents received awards.
CERT, which stands for Community Emergency Response Team, is a program that trains residents to be able to help themselves and their neighbors in case of emergency.
One of the award winners, Corona del Mar resident Kate Mulvehill, used her CERT training last month to save the life of her choking father.
“This program saves lives,” Mulvehill told Corona del Mar Today after the incident; read the complete story here.
The dinner and banquet was held at the Newport Coast Community Center. In addition to awards, volunteers and staff will discuss the 2009 accomplishments and goals for this year, said Jennifer Schulz, a Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman.
Among the awards recipients is Karen Tringali, the president of the Corona del Mar Residents Association, who was named the Newport Beach Fire Department CERT Volunteer of the Year.
Mulvehill received the lifesaving award. And CERT volunteer BJ Johnson — also of Corona del Mar — received an award for her assistance with a recent fire on Orchid Avenue.
Other award recipients include Fire Captain Rob Beuch, who earned the Kevin Pryor Memorial CERT Instructor of the Year award; Balboa Island, led by Chris and Debra Boelkes, who won the Newport Beach Fire Department CERT Neighborhood of the Year award; Corona del Mar resident Nancy Moran-Sanchez, who earned the Newport Beach Fire Department Spirit of CERT Award; and seasonal lifeguard Trever Gregory, who earned the certificate of appreciation for his assistance over the last four months.
