Beach Restroom Lights Draw Neighbor Complaints — Again
Last week, the lights were fine. Last night, not so much.
Neighbors along Lower Buck Gully were kept awake Tuesday night by glaring, bright lights on the exterior of the Little Corona State Beach public restroom — in spite of city promises that low-watt bulbs would be used.

But on Tuesday night, the bright bulbs were back.
“The fixtures look similar to headlights and they have the same powerful lighting effect as helicopter search lights, except these are shining directly into our house across the canyon,” one neighbor wrote in an email to Newport Beach’s deputy director of public works. “The lighting on this building should have been designed to work with the surrounding location – a quiet, residential, canyon setting that has minimal intrusive artificial lighting. We live in a beautiful canyon area that is now ruined by the lighting on this new structure.”
City workers have promised to investigate.
The restroom reconstruction has been going on since late last year. Workers have been inconsistent over the course of the project, causing it to be delayed and behind schedule. The most recent opening date — July 4 weekend — could again be missed, in which case the city will order extra portable toilets for holiday crowds, charging the contractor for those toilets.
The old restrooms, built in 1956, were outdated and small. The new building is double in size and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The project budget was more than $100,000.
