Thank goodness for those of us experiencing symptoms of "Rose's Withdrawal Syndrome." This is a new malaise affecting certain residents of CDM caused by a lack of Salmon Croissants, tasty donuts, pastries, and various Rose's sandwiches. I think we can survive another 36 hours without hospitalization, though driving large trucks is not recommended. :-)

Some further thoughts - response to Jamie Dow - no, the fire rings DO NOT help the economy. Yes they bring out of town people to the beach. But those people DO NOT spend any money in CDM. They bring their food and firewood from home. They fill their gas tank at home, they bring their beer from home. They benefit the economy where they come from, not CDM. But they certainly leave us their trash. The tourists who help the ecomony stay at local hotels and eat at the restaurants. Very few have beach fires. Regarding the UCI student, I would say the fire rings do contribute to drugs and under age drinking. They sure did when I was a kid. The stories I can tell of the parties we had down there in the 1960's and 70's, it's a wonder we didn't all end up in jail. Anybody else remember the multi day pot party in the cave at Pirates Cove? I rest my case... :-)

Well, let's hope that this time the Commission allows the public to speak on this. I don't have anything against a wood fire. My issues are with the late night crowds, the expense to the city taxpayers to maintain a venue that very few local residents use on a regular basis, the dangers to children in the dark and the fact that the residential neighborhood in CDM is simply not equipped for the large late night crowds. The fire rings at Balboa Pier are a completely different situation, that is a well lit, open commercial area equipped to handle large numbers of people. A solution to this would be to leave the rings at Balboa Pier and remove all or most of the rings at Big Corona. A further problem arises if Big Corona is reduced to say 10 rings, if you have 50 people at each ring, that's 500 people leaving the beach between 10 and 11 pm. The beach is NEVER cleared in the summer before 10:30 sometimes pushing into 11pm. The simplest solution is to close Big Corona at sunset. Again I ask readers - when was the last time you used the fire rings, and when was the last time you went swimming at Big Corona after dark? There is no law that I am aware of that requires the taxpayers of Newport Beach to provide recreational services for non-residents - which are 95% or more of the people who use the fire rings. For myself, the only time I've used the fire rings in ten years was one time when my shredder went down and we took a big bag of old papers to burn. And that time our little beach fire was interrupted by some kids with a 4WD truck doing donuts in the sand near the fire rings!

As a cyclist, I'm exercising for my health.

The fire rings at Big Corona and elsewhere in Newport Beach are a concern. We've been organizing like-minded neighbors, working up a mailing list and gathering articles to support our position.

You can't imagine our delight to find a new essay by UCLA philosopher and author, Sam Harris, in our Inbox this morning. His "<a href="http://www.samharris.org/blog/item/the-fireplace-delusion" target="_blank">Fireplace Delusion</a>" adds a brilliant perspective to the arguments against the fire rings:

"On a cold night, most people consider a well-tended fire to be one of the more wholesome pleasures that humanity has produced. A fire, burning safely within the confines of a fireplace or a woodstove, is a visible and tangible source of comfort to us. We love everything about it: the warmth, the beauty of its flames, and—unless one is allergic to smoke—the smell that it imparts to the surrounding air.

I am sorry to say that if you feel this way about a wood fire, you are not only wrong but dangerously misguided. I mean to seriously convince you of this—so you can consider it in part a public service announcement—but please keep in mind that I am drawing an analogy. I want you to be sensitive to how you feel, and to notice the resistance you begin to muster as you consider what I have to say.

The case against burning wood is every bit as clear as the case against smoking cigarettes. Indeed, it is even clearer, because when you light a fire, you needlessly poison the air that everyone around you for miles must breathe. Even if you reject every intrusion of the “nanny state,” you should agree that the recreational burning of wood is unethical and should be illegal, especially in urban areas."

I went on the same website and tried to sign up. I had the exact same problem but I gave up. Thanks for the information. I will go back and leave the "referral" number blank and maybe I will be able to sign up as well.

Why didn't the Planning Commission protect public views? Curb height and not one inch more! I think there needs to be an investigation into the decisions the Planning Commission is making that are clearly not on the public interest.j

We're not alone! It's wonderful to welcome Democrats to OC. I moved here in 1954 when it was prime John Birch country. What a change - for the better.
