Balloons that hit overhead electrical lines caused a power outage that left thousands of Corona del Mar residents with flickering lights and more than 100 without power most of today.

The outage occurred at 7:02 a.m. today, affecting 4,788 customers, said Lauren Bartlett of Southern California Edison’s media relations department.

The outage lasted about 30 seconds for most customers, she said. But 138 customers near Fourth and Jasmine avenues remain without power — eight hours as of this post — while crews continue to work to repair the lines, she said. All customers should have power restored by 6 p.m.

The original outage affected homes in the Flower Streets along with neighborhoods including Jasmine Creek, Corona Highlands, Cameo Shores, Cameo Highlands and Shore Cliffs. The outage was within the borders of Acacia Avenue, Jasmine Creek Drive, Garrett Drive and Brighton Road.
