I participate with Nancy on the Bike Safety Committee. She runs an effective meeting. Improved bike safety in CdM is a top priority for Nancy. I'm pleased she'll continue working these initiatives to implementation.
Priority Voter

The November election will be about priorities and costs. Some Corona del Mar realities are boarded-up retailers, declining real estate values, and reduced tax revenues. Corona del Mar is undergoing a transformation as seen by the police presence during the last two evenings at the main beach. Instead of bike racks, the priority might be whether it's safe to bicycle to Big Corona.
Beach Reformer

Let's vote for the candidate that will reform Corona del Mar State Beach such as terminating the Fuji Grill lease and replacing it with a Park Ranger Station. The candidate should be able to negotiate the issues of a city-operated state beach. This week showed the difficulty and costs for the NBPD to operate down the narrow hill road to the beach. The NBPD costs eradicate Newport Beach's lease profits from the Fuji Grill tenant. There is a productivity cost of uniformed NBPD officers getting out of police cars to trudge through the sand at the firepits. The alternative might be Park Rangers with all-terrain vehicles that call the NBPD as needed. The observatory can be better used for beach surveillance by a Park Ranger while lifeguards staff the three towers and keep the Rescue Jeep close to the waterline. Park rangers should monitor beach visitors, lifeguards watch the water, and police handle traffic and crime.

I too am pleased to see Nancy Gardner will run for re-election. The issues of the past few days with the Persian New Year have occurred every year for about 15 years. Yes it is an issue that needs to be addressed - having thousands of people show up in a residential neighborhood late at night with no notice or warning to residents. Just another reason to do away or substantially reduce the fire rings at Big Corona - as other cites have done. I know this is a touchy issue, but is one I hope she will pursue after re-election. Regarding the comments about Rangers. About 10+ years ago the Ranger program was implemented and was supposed to provide a Ranger to monitor Big Corona and the bluff top, by walking around and meeting people. Instead they gave him a car and made it a park patrol and you rarely see a Ranger, and I haven't seen one out of their car in about 3-4 years. That wasn't the plan. Also, the lifeguard HQ was designed to enable one lifeguard to monitor the entire beach during slower periods and to provide them with a facility to store supplies, etc. Previously they had to stage out of the Harbor Patrol center on Bayside. And the whole idea of the Fuji Grill was to implement a better quality food service at the beach than the old hot dog and ice cream stand. Sadly it hasn't gotten much local support, even though it's a great place to go have a bite to eat - AND you get FREE parking! We live at the beach, let's USE it! :)

The Park Ranger mini-SUV was actually NBPD, never went down to beach, and stayed in the car on the bluffs watching for cocktail glasses and unleashed dogs. The Fuji Grill launched with rice dishes starting at $3.95 and now has a beef menu with a $7.50 burger. The Fuji Grill operator shops at the local Albertson's for his supplies according to the uncertain traffic. How has the percent on revenue been for the city now the Fuji has gone beef? Also, regarding neighborhood solicitors, many of the violators are agents for Time Warner and AT&T trying to sell high speed Internet and TV. The problem is throughout Newport and could be resolved with a strong letter to the providers stating that further underground expansion will be rejected if neighborhood solicitations occur by employee salespersons as well as third-party agents.
