I agree with you a 100% but being a CDM resident and going to the meetings I can tell you it will never happen. How about building a tunnel at Mc A and PCH that goes all the way to Poppy, make the stretch in between a pedestrian zone. How about that? I can do it in Europe why not here, Laguna be a perfect place for starters.

I'm leading the Lido Is Troop 37 boy scouts, helping them earn Cycling merit badge. At the end of each ride we must return to Big Corona beach and so I guide them through CdM on Coast Hwy. Other times traffic has been busy so we can slide in and peddal along, but yesterday in lighter traffic we were tormented by auto drivers who kept blowing their horn and wagging their finger at us, even though they had no problems going around us. It's a hostile environment riding on PCH thru CdM. Eliminate parking? What a beautiful dream! In the meantime, give us Sharrows!

Back in the nineteen fifties fifth ave was left as a corridor for the move of PCH out of the center of CdM. Developers (Irvine co) and homeowners objected. They won, you lost. RGB

Actually as I understand it, what was proposed in the 50's-60's was the "Coastal Freeway" project. It would not have removed PCH or the shopping district, but would have added a multi-lane freeway down 5th that tied into MacAurthur Blvd (as another freeway) and the 73 creating a major traffic artery with CDM as the end destination, sort of like the 10 in Santa Monica. There was also a group who wanted to turn CDM into Santa Monica, along with high rise condos and high density housing to open the area up for more sales potential. Can you imagine CDM with a population of say 30,000? LOL
