Protest Underway Against Cuts in Public Education

On the eve of the delivery of layoff notices to teachers, a crowd of about 100 people, all wearing blue, has turned out for a protest outside Costa Mesa High School.

“Mostly, it’s teachers here,” said Tory LeVitre, Corona del Mar High School teacher and union representative. But today at school, many students and all administrators wore blue in a gesture to raise attention about how the state budget crisis is hurting schools. The protest is scheduled to run until 6 p.m.

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District last month announced that it would be increasing classroom sizes, eliminating teachers as well as counselors and other positions in order to save money. Read our story here.

Teachers will learn tomorrow if they are losing their jobs.

According to a union website, “principals will hand deliver the notices to teachers at their sites starting tomorrow (3/5/10) and through March 15th (the deadline according to state law).” To see the entire notice, including steps for teachers who get notices, click here.

LeVitre said she did not know how many teachers might be cut at CdMHS, but sources said Harbor View could see one or two teachers cut. At both schools this morning, teachers handed out informational flyers to parents, which alleged that state legislators made secret deals with corporate lobbyists for $2 billion in tax breaks at the expense of public education.
