Just 48 hours after a Corona del Mar Today reader left a comment about the potential danger of a city sign near the Community Youth Center, crews altered the sign to make it safer.
The sign at the CYC at Fifth and Iris avenues had the city’s sailboat logo attached to the front, jutting up above the top of the wall (as seen in bottom photo). This logo is used on city signs throughout Corona del Mar and Newport Beach, but this sign is a low wall on a grassy area with a lot of foot traffic.
A reader said her daughter pointed out the sign to her recently, and they both worried that a child walking on top of the sign could fall on the sail’s point, causing injury.
Corona del Mar Today forwarded the reader’s concern to City Councilwoman Nancy Gardner, who alerted City Manager Dave Kiff. Today, crews had lowered the sail so the point no longer is a safety hazard.
