Harbor View Elementary School students arrived at school today in nightgowns and robes, wearing Homer Simpson slippers and cozy jammies — all to celebrate Read Across America, which is celebrated this year on the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
Fathers arrived at school with robes over their business attire, taking turns reading stories to students. The Newport Beach Fire Department sent firefighters to read stories, as well.
“We love reading to the students,” said Jennifer Schulz, a Fire Department spokeswoman. “We look forward to attending again next year.”
Even teachers wore pajamas, and the school’s librarian had on her robe. (Dr. Seuss books were flying off the shelves today.) Principal Charlene Metoyer wore a Dr. Seuss hat while she checked the classroom activities.
“Everyone loves this day,” Metoyer said. “It’s fun and gets everyone involved in reading.”
Organizers with the National Education Association say that 45 million readers — including First Lady Michelle Obama — will participate in the 13-year-old event. Read more about it here.
