No cases of swine flu have been diagnosed in Orange County as of Monday afternoon, according to The Orange County Health Officer.

The county as well as the Newport-Mesa Unified School District are working with the Center for Disease Control in monitoring any possible cases.

“Our nurses and health assistants continue to educate students and staff about precautionary measures including routine handwashing, covering mouth to cough, etc.,” said Laura Boss, director of communications for NMUSD.

For more information, visit the CDC’s website here. Earlier today, the city of Newport Beach put out an email saying that while no cases have been reported locally, “the situation is evolving rapidly.”

There have been 40 cases diagnosed in the United States, including 11 in California. The outbreak has caused at least 149 deaths in Mexico, and the CDC has advised against any nonessential travel to Mexico.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs that can affect humans and is contagious. Symptoms are similar to human flu and include fever, aches, sore throats or stomach aches.

State education officials urge parents to keep children home if they show these symptoms. A school in the Sacramento area is closed until at least Thursday because a seventh-grade boy had the flu.
