Volleyball Court Won’t Violate ADA Rules, City Says

A proposed volleyball court at China Cove beach will not violate the American Disabilities Act, according to a Newport Beach official’s letter sent to the Coastal Commission.

The commission appeared ready to approve the court at its February meeting until a last-minute protest was submitted by Corona del Mar resident and lawyer Julia Royall Gold. Gold sent a letter and testified that the proposed court would violate the ADA because it denied full access to the beach.

The commissioners decided to delay a vote for a month to allow Newport Beach officials to look into Gold’s claim.

Stephen Badum, director of Public Works for Newport Beach, wrote a letter last month to the commission, stating he had reviewed the beach and proposed court location, and that no violations would be created. The poles, he said, would be 75 feet away from one beach access point, and 100 feet away from the other.

The Coastal Commission’s next meeting will be in Santa Cruz on March 10 through 12. The volleyball court is on the agenda for March 10; read the entire agenda here.
