The National Weather Service is warning coastal Orange County residents that the tsunami warning will remain in effect until about 6 p.m. tonight.
“Coastal residents are advised to stay out of the water…off the beach…and away from harbors and marinas,” the alert states. “Wave heights and currents are amplified by irregular shoreline and are difficult to predict. The initial wave may not be the largest. Later waves may be larger…” (Read the complete advisory here.)
The city of Newport Beach used an automatic phone call to alert residents that beaches were closed. The possibility of large surf, predicted to appear at about 2:30 p.m., drew a small crowd above Big Corona State Beach. But when the waves didn’t materialize, the observers with cameras and binoculars filtered away.
