Chicken

The streets in Corona del Mar are too narrow. And I don’t really get this, because it seems to me that modern cars are generally no bigger than the boats that people used to drive back in the day.

As a result, some people take the tactic of driving down the middle of the streets, even if another car is approaching. It becomes a game of chicken, with the bigger car, or the more aggressive driver, pushing the weak or the nice off to the side.

Never mind that most of the time, if cars would scoot over, they could pass each other no problem.

But the longer I live in Corona del Mar, the more I see the chicken games.

I wonder why they don’t just make the streets one-way? Or limit parking to one side of the street?

Last night, at a neighborhood watch meeting, one man asked the lieutenant why the cops just didn’t take all the stop signs out of CdM. Because everyone runs them, and no tickets ever are given, so why bother pretending?

Everyone laughed, but I have always wondered about the seeming random placement of stop signs in our town. Is there any rhyme or reason to it? Some four-way intersections, some not? Why? Just make everything four-way, if you ask me. It’d slow everyone down.

Or do you all like those dips in the streets that bottom out your car, if you happen to drive a little car?
