Charlene Metoyer, principal of Harbor View Elementary, has been named Elementary Principal of the Year in the district and in the county, she told parents and students on Thursday.
“I’m so excited and honored,” she said. “I’m humbled.”
The Newport-Mesa Administrators’ Association first selected Metoyer as the elementary principal of the year, and then a nomination went to the Region 17 division of the Orange County Association of California School Administrators. After winning at the county level, Metoyer now will be up for principal of the year for the entire state.
Teachers at the school presented Metoyer with flowers and a sign at the morning Flag Deck ceremony today, as well as decorated her office.
Metoyer arrived at Harbor View for the start of the 2007 school year, the fourth principal or interim principal the school had in place in a three-year period.
“I think she’s wonderful,” said Jan Parker, the president of the school’s Parent Faculty Organization. “Our school needed a good leader, and we have one in Char. She definitely cares.”
Metoyer, who previously was principal at Eastbluff Elementary School, said she had help in earning the awards.
“The efforts of our fabulous students, wonderful parents and the best teachers ever have made me look good,” she said. “The best award I got are the hugs from students every day…My bucket is overflowing!”
