A passionate effort to replace a volleyball court on China Cove beach could be resolved after the Coastal Commission’s February meeting.
The battle over volleyball at China Cove heated up last winter after the 20-something-year-old court’s poles broke, and players sought permission to relocate it. City officials then realized that permits and Coastal Commission approval had never been in place for the courts — and residents began complaining and asking the courts be permanently removed.
The city’s Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission held public hearings last winter, and some neighbors testified that volleyballs repeatedly hit their cars, that players created traffic problems in the neighborhood that has no public parking, and that the court took up too much sandy beach space.
Proponents of the court said that the beach was ideal for playing, because it was sheltered and because the Big Corona courts (picture here) are always so crowded.
The Coastal Commission staff report, which urges the commissioners to approve the court replacement, says the court should be moved to an area currently covered with non-native ice plants, creating more usable beach space. Players could park on nearby Ocean Boulevard, the report states.
The Commission said construction restrictions should be in place so that work wouldn’t be performed during summer months, and equipment wouldn’t be stored on the beach.
The Commission’s meeting is scheduled for Feb. 10 through 12 in Oceanside; read the agenda here.
