I respectfully disagree with Tracey. Balboa Island has had the turf for some time now. It seems to be handling the traffic relatively well. I'd like to see it after 6-12 months. I seriously doubt there is going to be any toxic particles going into the dirt that hasn't already been there in far higher quantaties when people toss ciggerettes and garbage into the planters. I am considering planting it in my parkway. I'm tired of people's dogs peeing on my grass and killing it. I pay a lot of money to the gardner to keep it nice and it is constantly under siege from the dogs. My option seems to be to either plant a cactus garden or artificial turf. I'll go with the green grass.

This is interesting- there are no toxic issues with synthetic grass. It's notup for debate- there just simply are none. However, the City should contact a major manufacturer like SYNLawn to learn more about the products, the industry and the issues. We have tremendous experience counseling Cities on this subjectand you can see large areas of SYNLawn installed for many Orange County Cities as well as Cities all over Southern California. SYNLawn is the nation's largest and only virtically integrated synthetic grass manufacturer. With regard to the person who was appalled right away- you cannot tell what the produt will look like until the installation is coplete. SO please look again, however, I can tell you that if we installed SYNLawn, you would not be able to tell. You can see a great example outside Irvine CIty Hall at 1 Civic Center Drive. There's over 8,000 sq.ft.of it. It's the best looking syntehtic grass you will ever see. Any interested party or city can contact me at 866-739-5206 for a complete education about synthetic grass and synthetc grass issues. www,synlawn.com

There are definitely positives and negatives to the fake grass and artificial grass lawns. First and foremost the synthetic lawns during the summer months can get very hot to the touch. I believe if the pet issue with regards to waste can be handled by picking up any debris and hosing the area off, also their are enzymes made to break down pet waste and odor that work great. Also in a high traffic area the artificial lawn material will have to be cleaned and powerbroomed on a regular basis. The artificial turf in this case will be fairly easy to maintain.. As there will be no foot traffic on the synthetic turf. a quick rake or booming of the material followed by a short rinse of water should keep the material looking great long into the future.. In regards to the eco friendliness of the artificial grass, many manufacturers now produce artificial grass that is recyclable. The pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer and water required to keep a real grass area looking great is definitely not environmentally friendly. In fact many manufacturers now produce artificial grass that is recyclable. While no artificial grass will have the cool to the touch feel real grass in the summer heat, and until recently the fresh cut smell or real grass, for those of us living with concerns to our fresh water supply it is a great alternative to the real thing. I believe the concerns Ms. Baltera has with artificial grass and health risks, unfortunately, are due to ignorance. I am sure your readers would appreciate any reports that back her opinion. The issues that should be concerning are the quality and appearance of the grass after it is installed. Some of the artificial grass today would not even be recognized as artificial by pedestrians if it is installed properly and is of a high quality thread. Not to mention being lead free. There are many cities and citizens that are incorporating artificial grass in their landscape and xeriscape plans. The reasons for doing so are the long term cost benefits, reduction in water consumption, less harsh on the environment (no pesticides, fertilizers, gas consumption), and visually appealing (if it is high quality Made in the USA product). Please feel free to call me for an education of artificial grass or would like to see a high quality product with a reasonable price. We are strictly a distributor with a connection to high quality installers. THE FUTURE OF GRASS HAS ARRIVED!

I also have to agree with the comments above. As Ms. Baltera has good intentions, I hope she researches further into the artificial grass industry. Many turf companies have done tons of research and development in the field of artificial grass that has eliminated many of the health concerns. Artificial grass has been proven to become even eco-friendly, and I believe the city of Corona Del Mar will see significant improvement in the the fresh new look, plus its ability to stay clean without maintenance. Much of the information that I have found can be seen here: http://www.SyntheticGrassWarehouse.com I hope everyone can consider this alternative solution.
