boaA popular Bank of America parking lot attendant is recovering from injuries after a car crashed into his booth in back of the branch at 3300 East Coast Highway earlier this week.

Gunars Bundza of Newport Beach was in his wooden kiosk in the bank parking lot when an 87-year-old woman driving a 2001 Mercedes Benz collided with two poles, said Sgt. Evan Sailor. The woman was trying to pull into a parking spot when her car suddenly accelerated, knocking two signs onto the kiosk and causing it to fall over onto Bundza.

The incident occurred at 9:43 a.m. Monday. Bundza was taken by ambulance to Hoag Hospital, where he was treated for pain in his chest and leg. A police officer drive the woman home from the bank.

Friends of Bundza said they spoke to him on Tuesday, and he said he planned to return to work this week.

The branch manager did not respond to a message seeking comment on the incident.
