City crews will be cleaning from last week’s storms into February, according to city reports. Hundreds of tons of debris, including plastic, foam and seaweed covered beaches this week, mostly oceanfront beaches from the Newport Pier to the Santa Ana river mouth. “This debris will continue to float down the Santa Ana River and accumulate on West Newport beaches for the next seven to 10 days,” the report said.
Corona del Mar beaches also were affected with debris and erosion. Lower Buck Gully poured all week onto Little Corona, creating a large drop in the sand between the public path and the tidepools. This weekend, orange posts and signs were posted and some areas were closed.
Besides beach cleanup, Newport Beach general services crews removed more than 100 city-owned trees last week, as well as 16 private trees. They provided 1,288 sandbags to residents. Rainfall at the city’s Corporate Yard was 4.95 inches from Monday through Friday.
