The Becker Surfboards shop at 3140 East Coast Highway has closed.
Artist Brian Bent, who created the artwork that gave the shop its trademark look, said there were several reasons why the business closed.
“We were ready to rock it out,” he said. But the economy, rent concerns, some retirements and other factors made the business close its doors permanently after the Christmas holiday.
The shop, which sold surfboards and clothing for children and adults, male and female, was a local favorite since it opened in 1994.
Bent said the shop’s closure was difficult. “This was my first carte blanche building,” he said, adding that he did both the exterior sculpture wall and interior portraits and paintings. He plans to sell the art from the shop at a special one-day show scheduled for Saturday Jan. 30.
Corona del Mar Today has heard that a Hurley retail shop could be moving into the space.
