Wrecking crews began taking down the old Oasis Senior Center at Marguerite and Fifth avenues this week, marking the real start of an 18-month project that will give the city “a world class senior center,” said City Councilman Keith Curry.

The project originally was budgeted at $20 million, but millions were saved on both the construction bid and interest from subsequently being able to forgo a bond deal, Curry told the Corona del Mar Residents Association Board last week.

The city has dispersed the Oasis Center’s classes and activities throughout Newport Beach’s other facilities. For more information on the project, visit the city’s website.
