Fashion Island Shuts Down Carousel

carouselThe Fashion Island carousel was shuttered as of this morning, in spite of a grass-roots effort to save it that included an online petition with more than 1,000 signatures.

“That’s sad,” said Keree James, the mother who started the petition and also led a one-day boycott of Fashion Island last month.

James, who has two young children, said the carousel removal was just one of many changes at Fashion Island in recent months that seemed to make the shopping center less family-friendly. The pop-jet fountain has been removed as part of renovations, the kiosks that once sold toys and hair bows are gone, and as of Dec. 31, McDonald’s has closed.

John Christensen, vice president of the Irvine Company, has said that change is a reality in the world of retail — and that Fashion Island continues to have attractions for kids.

“Fashion Island continues to be a family-friendly destination with numerous restaurants and attractions for children,” he said.

It looks like they'll have to go to South Coast Plaza to ride the carousel now.

change is a reality in the world of retail = more vacancy for irvine company. Not shopping there anymore, and the parking at the Spectrum is terrible...why bother. South Coast Plaza is looking pretty good...since their change in retail seems to be able to keep their carousel. The Christmas tree this year was terrible compared to years past too.
