DUI Arrests: Should Papers Print Names?

The Daily Pilot has announced it will no longer run its popular weekly feature that names all those arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

The Newport Mesa Daily Voice reacts by saying it will continue to run a better version.

Corona del Mar Today wants to clarify its position on naming suspects of crimes — not just those accused of drunk driving.

We do not name suspects unless we plan to cover the case through the entire criminal justice system. Currently, covering every suspected drunk driver throughout the system would be an impossible task.

Unless, however, we can clear someone’s name — we won’t print it to begin with.

Some newspaper readers think publishing names is a good thing. It’s a deterrent, it’s gossipy goodness, it’s what you want from your local paper.

We strive to be fair, and to be responsible.
