Fitness Cyclist
December 14th, 2009
I want to relate an incident that befits the memory of Donald Murphy and his passion for fitness cycling. On Wednesday evening Dec 9th at sunset, I rode up the San Joaquin hill from the Back Bay – the very same hill that he had climbed before dawn unfortunately for the last time. The NBPD has had an unsafe practice of speeding up or down the hill and driving without headlights in doing furtive surveillance of the Back Bay for substance abuse. But on that Wednesday about 5:00 pm, the NBPD police car making a U-turn halfway down the hill safely waited and then slowly drove around me. In memory of Donald Murphy, we can all safely share the road.

Sympathy to the family and friends of Don Murphy. The irony is that he was a civil engineer. The accident parallels the tragedy at Tesoro/Ridge Park for road design. Cyclists will not be safe if cars can enter an uphill or downhill roadway without a clear view of the approaching traffic or merge in a separately marked lane. Entrances and exits to communities have to be designed with a clear view of all traffic, including bicycles.
