Newport Beach Civic Center: What's in The Plans

The new Newport Beach City Hall and Civic Center, which voters approved to have built on a stretch of undeveloped land off MacArthur Boulevard near the Central Library, currently incorporates a pedestrian bridge, a dog park, a bird-watching area and possibly a sculpture garden among other features.

“It’s on the expensive side,” Mayor Ed Selich told the Corona del Mar Residents Association last week at its monthly board meeting. “We’re building a Civic Center and not just a City Hall.”

The project currently could cost as much as $100 million compared to an older estimate of $84 million.

The City Council will approve plans for the project in November. Until then, they will review elements of the design, consider community input and consider the economic viability of the project.

The current plan involves excavation that is expensive but will preserve ocean views not only for residents in the area, but also for drivers on MacArthur Boulevard, Selich said. He added that the pedestrian bridge over San Miguel Drive will help traffic in the area, although it is another expensive element — about $2.3 million.

More information about the latest plans is on the city’s website.
