A weekend traffic stop in Corona del Mar ended with the arrest of three people in a stolen car with plates from another stolen car, stolen mail and six cell phones that also might have been stolen, police announced on a Facebook page today.
According to the update, a Newport Beach police officer stopped a 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit at 1:07 a.m. Saturday at East Coast Highway and Irvine Terrace. The car didn’t have a front license plate, but the officer then learned that neither the driver or his two passengers had valid drivers licenses. The officer checked the car registration and learned it was reported stolen last month in Newport Beach. The license plate, however, matched a car reported stolen in Corona.
Inside the car, officers found mail that had been stolen from the 2500 block of Point Del Mar, along with an owner’s manual and registration papers taken from an unlocked vehicle in the same block. They also found six cell phones, which they are trying to trace to see if they also were stolen.
The three people, all of Corona, were arrested on suspicion of auto theft; bail was set for $20,000 for each. They included a man, 27 years old; a man, 36 years old; and a woman, 42 years old.
Police ask if you have information about these thefts, or if you think you might be related to one of the rimes, to call (949) 644-3717. You can also call the police hotline at 800-550-NBPD; messages can be left anonymously.
