fire batterClocks moved overnight, giving us an extra hour to enjoy the candy fruits of our Halloween labor and also plenty of time to change the batteries in our homes’ smoke detectors.

Newport Beach Fire Department officials said it’s a proven fact that smoke alarms save hundreds of lives each year — if they are working.

“Maintaining a smoke alarm is just as important as having one,” said spokeswoman Jennifer Schulz. “A smoke alarm that doesn’t work is like not having one at all.”

She said anyone who wanted more information on fire safety should call (949) 644-3104. Also, anyone with questions about Daylight Savings Time can visit this website or this one.
