A 12-year-old Newport Beach boy was seriously injured this morning when he ran across MacArthur Boulevard against a red light and was struck by a pickup truck. The boy is a Corona del Mar Middle School student and apparently was running to school when he was hit, said Sgt. Evan Sailor.

The accident occurred about 7:17 a.m. when the driver of a red Dodge pickup was driving southbound along MacArthur Boulevard at Ford Road, police said.

Witnesses at the scene told police that the boy ran against a steady red light, and the truck had the green light.

Newport Beach Fire Department crews took the child to Mission Hospital, where police say he was listed in serious condition. The driver of the truck was not injured, and he was released at the scene. Traffic Investigators do not believe that speed alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.

Traffic was affected at the intersection for hours after the crash, according to several Corona del Mar Today readers.
