Leaf Blowers Report to Go to City Council

leafA Newport Beach environmental committee has passed a resolution that would restrict the use of most leaf blowers in the city.

The resolution means the issue will now go before the City Council, where the community will get further opportunities to give input before any vote or action is taken. “Part of the EQAC request is for public outreach, and as this affects so many different parties we will want to have a lot of input, at least in my opinion,” said City Councilwoman Nancy Gardner.

The issue came before the Environmental Quality Affairs Citizens Advisory Committee a month ago — read that story here. At Gardner’s urging, the group decided to bolster its report with more data before going forward.

The new report cites noise and air pollution caused by leaf blowers. Leaf blowers, the report says, can lead to high blood pressure and stress as well as hearing impairment. Read the complete report here.

The report also cites Laguna Beach’s complete ban on blowers, and the strict regulation of blowers in cities like Los Angeles and Palo Alto. If the resolution becomes law in Newport Beach, it would affect only residential landscapers and not city crews or commercial developments.

The Corona del Mar Residents Association is conducting a poll on the topic; click on the website if you would like to offer your feedback.

A leaf blower ban could potentially impact all of Newport Beach, but Corona del Mar residents have been major players in pushing the issue forward. To read about one village woman’s petition, click here.
