Newport Beach Library Replaces Return Box

The Newport Beach Central Library has replaced the damaged drop-off box on Avocado Avenue.

The new box is a temporary replacement, employees said. It is smaller and doesn’t face the street for convenient access, the way the old box did. That box was destroyed, possibly by a bus hitting it or by vandals, a few weeks ago. Police and library officials weren’t sure what or who caused the damage, or when exactly it occurred.

Meanwhile, the library opened an hour late today so that employees could attend a city employees’ breakfast. More than three dozen people didn’t realize the hours were changed and were forced to wait outside the doors.

Although the hours for Tuesday were posted on the library’s website, nobody waiting had thought to check.

Central Library also will be closing early — at 5 p.m. — on Friday.
