clairecampaignryPromising everything from better cafeteria food to more school spirit, 22 Harbor View sixth graders gave speeches Friday morning, urging their classmates to elect them as Student Council officers for the 2009-2010 school year.

“When I came here three years ago, right away I knew it was my second home,” said Tommy Crone, who was running for vice president. “I’m super spicy!” he added.

Dante Marino, running for president, said he’d like to have lunchtime entertainment several times a month, with student-produced skits or concerts.

“How about that?” he asked. “Vote for Dante — he’s cool as a penguin!”

Candidate Claire Robertson, running for president, wore a “Big Cheese” hat and said she wanted to start a reading program to help younger kids in the community. Her sister, Bonnie, running for vice president, said she wanted better drinking fountain water and also wanted to raise money to help Harbor View’s sister school. And Thomas Robertson, running for secretary, said he was full of ideas but also very qualified. “I’m a fast writer and a fast typer, and I get good grades,” he said. “Because I’m a triplet and have two sisters, I’ve learned to be patient and to be a good listener.”

Ryan Frojen, running for vice president, said he wanted to improve cafeteria food and begin a Taco Tuesdays tradition. “I also heard our meatballs bounce,” he said. “I think we need to try to fix this. If I win, I’ll work on this.”

Frojen also said that studies show that students learn better if they can chew gum and listen to music in class and said if he won, he’d try to get the school to let teachers test those theories.

Election results will be announced at 3 p.m. The speeches and voting followed a week of fierce campaigning, with posters covering campus, t-shirts and stickers.
