One Response to “Tsunami Advisory — But Probably No Danger”
Comments
Several readers have asked about whether they should worry about a tsunami as a result of a 7.9 earthquake struck earlier today in American Samoa.
There is a tsunami advisory in effect for coastal Orange County, and there could be an increase in surf about 9 p.m. However, it likely won’t be dangerous or even obvious to most people.
Here’s what the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said:
“A Tsunami advisory is in effect for coastal Orange County and San Diego County. This threat is expected to begin for coastal areas around 2100 hours tonight. An advisory means that potential exists for strong currents and waves dangerous to persons can occur that are in or very near the water. Advisory remains in effect for the California coast. Tsunami wave amplitude was estimated at between 20-65 centimeters with 50 cm being the threshold for damage. Orange County is expected to remain below this 50 cm threshold. This Tsunami advisory is a result of an earthquake that occurred today near the Samoan Islands. No emergency actions are recommended at this time; OEM will continue to monitor the situation in coordination with Cal EMA.
Further information will be provided as it develops.”
