Parents Fired Up Over Fashion Island Carousel Closure

fi1fi2Among the parent-with-a-stroller crowd, the word is spreading, fast and furious — emphasis on the word furious.

Six years after its grand opening, the elaborate Venetian-style carousel at Fashion Island is scheduled to be removed, permanently, later this year.

“Everybody is talking about it,” said Ashley Rodi, a mother of two (4 and 2 1/2 years old). “It comes up everywhere I go — at preschool, at dance class, at soccer.”

“It is the most depressing thing,” said Keree James, who has two kids, 4 and 9 months old. “Their entire life was based on that carousel, in some ways.”

James Till, a father of three with another due any day, agreed.

“When I heard this, I was incredulous,” Till said. “It seems to me we are losing a very big piece of our community.”

Besides the carousel, the “pop-jet” fountain near the Gary’s store also is being replaced, all part of a major remodel of Fashion Island that was announce over the summer.

“There will no longer be space for the carousel as the adjacent building (where Charriol is located) is being pushed out into the courtyard to allow for more retail and dining space,” said Nina B. Robinson, vice president of marketing and communications for the Irvine Company Retail Properties.

James said she and many of her friends are dismayed at these changes. The kiosks, where she used to look at wind-up toys and girls’ hair bows, are gone. The miniature train closed two years ago when its owners, who are from San Diego, relocated the attraction so they’d have a shorter commute. BabyStyle went out of business and left Fashion Island.

“My friends and I like to come with our children and wander around,” James said. “We don’t go to Fashion Island with kids expecting to buy something, but we always end up carrying bags home.”

The shops, she said, seem to be changing from family-oriented businesses to more fashion-forward, more sophisticated shops.

Not so, Robinson said in an email. “While we understand the pop-jet fountain and carousel will be missed,” she said, “Fashion Island remains a wonderful place for visitors of all ages and is proud to be a popular destination for families.”

Fashion Island will continue to have a koi pond, the popular Iris Fountain by Haagen-Dazs, new, open-grass areas, Toy Boat, Build-A-Bear, story time at Barnes & Noble and more.

When the work is through, she said, visitors will be able to enjoy a hand-carved granite fountain in the Neiman Marcus courtyard that features a 45-foot-tall obelisk with a changing display of water and light.

“Change is a reality in the retail business,” she said. She added that the original J.C. Penney tire store, which opened 40 years ago, now is the home of popular restaurants. “Right now, Fashion Island is taking another step in its evolution with enhancements to our outdoor spaces and with the addition of Dean & DeLuca, Nordstrom, True Religion, Michael Stars, Seven for all Mankind.”

Till said he understands change — but the changes he’s seeing seem very anti-family.

“It’s very sophisticated and chichi for their clientele with dogs,” he said. “Not for families with children.”

Rodi said that Fashion Island could be more upscale without getting rid of child-friendly attractions. “Look at South Coast Plaza,” she said. “They have two carousels, and they have the most elite shops in the world. You can still have something there for kids.”

Parents said they usually see tons of parents with strollers at Fashion Island. But with no pop-jet fountain, no train, no carousel, no kiosks, there will be little left to make it their destination.

Till said he would like to organize a protest, or a petition, to try to convince the Irvine Company to keep the carousel, even if it’s moved to another location. James has created an online petition. She and the other parents want to see if they can rally the other local carousel fans.

“My goal is to create a groundswell of support to keep it,” Till said. “There’s got to be a way.”
