Parking Problems. Or Not.

I’ve been hearing people complaining about terrible parking problems in Corona del Mar. At a planning commission hearing last night about The Port Restaurant, several people mentioned parking problems. They were upset that restaurant visitors often park on city streets, making it harder for them to park very close to their homes. Time and again, I hear people discussing the terrible parking crunch in the village. There are even talks about adding a parking structure near the Old School Park along Carnation Avenue.

Personally, I have never had a problem parking my car in Corona del Mar. Sure, I don’t always get the place right in front of the spot I’m going. Sometimes, meeting someone for lunch at The Crow Bar or Panini can be tricky if it happens to be a street-sweeping day. But in general, if I want to park in CdM, I find a spot.

Maybe it’s because I moved here from San Francisco, where parking really was a problem. I often took buses and BART to and from work because I had no garage to put my car after a late shift, and my neighborhood literally had no parking for blocks around. We’d take buses or cabs to North Beach because parking was impossible. If you have ever driven for 45 minutes late at night, searching for a spot, ending up ten dark blocks from home, then you know a parking problem.

I don’t see it in Corona del Mar. I’m sorry, I just don’t.

I understand wanting to park in front of your own home. I have a space in front of my home, and if a big construction truck takes the spot, it’s ugly and annoying. But some people think they own the city street in front of where they live. I have had friends and babysitters get notes from a neighbor when they’ve parked in front of her home. I sympathize, and I try to accommodate it, but seriously — a legal space is up for grabs for anyone.

I’m curious as to what Corona del Mar Today readers think of this issue. Is parking a problem to you? Is it a problem for your business?
