The World Accordion to John Valeriano

accordion 2accordionWhen John Valeriano shows up, the party begins. At 81 years old, the Corona del Mar resident plays accordion, well, as if he’s been playing for decades. Every other Thursday night, Valeriano turns a quiet local pizza place into a gathering spot for dozens of local senior citizens who sing and dance the night away.

Recently, he played for a friend’s 90th birthday, filling the tiny Pizza Royale with music as dozens of diners clapped, sang and danced. “Roll Out The Barrel” followed “That’s Amore!” and as patrons shouted out requests, Valeriano played on. Victor Coliva, the birthday guest of honor, clapped and smiled as Valeriano played and called to him.

“I’ve been playing 72 years, started playing accordion when I was a kid,” Valeriano said. “My parents believed the richest child is poor without music, and back then, the accordion was popular.”

Valeriano, who grew up in Pennsylvania and Ohio and attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, also plays piano and trombone. He worked for years as a professional musician. But the life was hard for him and his three sons, Gary, Dean and John; he also has five grandchildren. He eventually went into the insurance business and moved to Southern California. (Even when he owned his Allstate business, he played accordion weekends, he said.) He moved to Corona del Mar two and a half years ago and began going to the Oasis Senior Center, where the eternally popular Ruby Suikki met him and heard him play. She invited him to play at a breakfast, and his local fan base took root.

Al Natale said he’s never heard a better accordion player. Eva Parson, 101, rarely misses a Thursday performance. His wife of 58 1/2 years, Anita, shows up to hear him and show her appreciation — “Well she’d better!” Valeriano said. He has hundreds of fans in the Corona del Mar community.

“I like dancing,” said Richard Taylor. “Especially to the polka.”

“He brings the house down,” said Bob Aprimian.

Valeriano said he doesn’t miss playing professionally, particularly since he’s found adoring fans. “I play for my own enjoyment,” he said.

Besides his unofficial Thursday sets, Valeriano plays for cardiac rehab patients at Hoag Hospital, and for Oasis Senior Center pancake breakfasts, which are currently on hold while the center is being reconstructed.

“I bring a lot of happiness,” he said.

Hey! This isn't the same guy that used to be in Torchy and the Polka Flames years ago is it? Back then he was known as the "Ten Magic Fingers of Cayuhoga County". Move over Dick Contino!

One memorable evening, after a few too many glasses of vino, he accidentally (although she had been heckling him) dropped his accordion on my mother's head and, with his insurance expertise, actually settled the claim by the end of the party. He is truly a Renaissance man.

John is truly a great accordian player as well an accomplished piano player. He is great at anything he does. And he enjoys playing & making people happy. In my opinion, he's better than Dick Contino . On my childrens & my birthday, he calls & when we pick up the phone, he starts playing & singing happy birthday. He's also a great brother & I love him as do my children.

Johnny, the bubble machine will always be on for you. When your fingers dance across the accordian keys, the ladies melt. Wunderful, wunderful, wunderful. Hoboken's loss is Corona Del Mar's gain.

He played "Lady of Spain" at my wedding dressed as a Spanish woman. It brought the house down. Besides all the old classics he does some of his own: "Who Stole the Pasta Fazule?", "Boppin' the Prosciutto", "If It's Saturday I Must Be at the Track", and his signature piece "I Only Stabbed You Cuz I Love You". It makes his stories (like having once insured Abe Vigoda's cousin) almost palatable.......

I've been too many Valeriano family events where Johnny Val played until late into the evening (even though the party had broken up hours earlier). All great times. He even played during his hernia surgery until the anesthetic kicked in. What a trooper!!!!!!!! P.S. Dean, what a hilarious post... Hope you didn't take too much time out of your day coming up with that laugh riot. When will you admit that you are only a straight man? Leave the comedy to Jake.
