An AT&T box caught fire and burned telephone wires for more than 200 customers, causing $200,000 in damage, according to a police report.
The cable access point box, located along Wavecrest Drive, caught fire sometime between 10 p.m. Monday and 5 a.m. Tuesday. AT&T employees told investigators that the box appeared to have been intentionally set on fire. Arson investigators were not, however, to determine how the fire started, and found no physical evidence or witnesses. “The detective assigned to the case has worked closely with the arson investigator from the Fire Department, and they do not believe the fire was intentionally set, and they are not investigating it as a crime,” said Lt. Craig Fox of the Newport Beach Police Department. Details on how telephone service was affected to those customers was not immediately available.
