The Newport Beach Police Department’s traffic division will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Friday at northbound Newport Boulevard at Finley Avenue, a spot chosen in part because it’s close to bars and restaurants.

The checkpoint will be held from about 9 p.m. to about 3 a.m., police said in a news release.

“The checkpoint will be clearly marked, and vehicles will be selected to move through the check lanes on a pre-set basis to ensure objectivity and timeliness,” the news release stated. Motorists passing through the checkpoint will receive a brochure called “Driving under the influence” that the department prepared. Funding for the checkpoints and other local anti-DUI programs was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the news release stated.
