Newport Beach Bat Rays Blue, 7, Phoenixville (Pa.) Phantoms, 3

By Scott Hook

In a Round Robin game at Cooperstown Dream Park, the Newport Beach Bat Rays Blue Team beat the Phoenixville Phantoms 7-3, with a three-run blast to deep centerfield by Cameron Hook and a solo shot by Max Kline off the scoreboard. The dinger was Kline’s first-ever home run.

Hook pitched a no hitter through three and two-thirds innings. Then, with two aboard from a walk and an error, Hook gave up his only hit – a homer to right field. However, Hook retired the next batter on a strike-out, then Preston Ellis pitched no-hit ball for the final two innings to preserve the victory — a combined one-hitter for Hook and Ellis pitched.

The Blue Team finished 4-2 in the Round Robin and were seeded No. 28; then the team went 1-1 in single-elimination play. They finished in Cooperstown with a 5-3 overall record. Final standings are still being calculated, but the Blue Team could possibly reach the Top 20 of 104 teams, sources say.

Newport Beach Bat Rays Blue, 15, Great Falls (Va.) Nationals, 2, four innings

By Greg Reposa of Corona del Mar

COOPERSTOWN — For the second game in a row, Ben Humphreys hit three home runs including a grand slam. This time the grand slam provided a walkoff mercy as the Bat Rays Blue defeated the Great Falls Nationals from Virginia 15-2 in four innings.

Humphreys now has tallied ten homers in seven games, with six coming in the last two.

Ryan Maister hit his first homer of the tourney, a 2-run jack in the third, and Parker Reposa pitched four strong innings to notch the win.

Next up, the Rays take on a team from Greenwich, Conn., which is the #5 seed in the tourney.

Humpheys will likely be on the hill for the Bat Rays. A win would propel them into Thursday’s Sweet Sixteen. The game will be webcast again on Field 1 at 8 p.m. Eastern.

They’d need to win then and again at 8 p.m. against one of the top 14 seeds to advance into Thursdays Sweet Sixteen.

OC hurricanes were seeded 17, and they play in the same side of the bracket; the Bat Rays could meet them at 3 p.m. Thursday. (They beat them we go to the championship game.)

Newport Beach Little League Bested in First Game

NBLL All Stars lost Wednesday, 11-2, forcing them into a win-or-die situation in the division tournament.

The tournament is double-elimination, so NBLL will play at 5 p.m. Monday against Laguna Beach Little League. If NBLL wins, they’d play games daily until a loss and elimination.

Greg Reposa, Corona del Mar Today’s youth sports contributor, caught up with the All Stars during practice breaks. We had five questions for each: Favorite player in history; most memorable play they ever made; school and favorite class; sunflower seeds or gum; and number and any reason behind it.

Here’s their answers.

Mason McLaughlin

1. My favorite baseball player would be Nolan Ryan because he inspires me to be better.
2. Hitting my first homerun for Irell and Manella the day after my birthday.
3. I go to CdM and my favorite class is math.
4. Gum or sunflower seeds? I’m just happy to be here and I hope I can help the ball club. We have to play them one day at a time.

5. My number is 15 because it is the date of my birthday.

Nick Ontiveros

1. Kevin Youkilis.
2. My most memorable play was boosting the morale of my team by smacking a home run off a pitcher they thought we could not hit off of.
3. Lincoln. PE and ART (will enter CDM next year for middle school).
4. Sunflower seeds.
5. I had no real intention of picking my number, 38, but it stood out from numbers like 33 and 37 which were the last jerseys available (I picked #20 during the regular season, which is Keven Youkilis’ number).

Jake Hastings

1. Lou Gehrig.
2. This year’s playoffs – I had a backhand play in the hole which robbed speedy Chad Redfearn of a base hit.
3. The Pegasus School; Spanish.
4. Sunflower seeds.
5. Number 55 – Because Tim Lincecum wears it (Go UW!)

Ryan Maister

1. Favorite baseball player is Cy Young.
2. I was pitching and the batter hit a ball at me that caused me to fall. Lying on my back on the ground, I threw the ball to first and got him out.

3. School is Tarbut and favorite class is history.
4. Sunflower seeds.
5. Jersey number is 13. I have worn 13 on my jersey since I was a little kid.

Kevin Fults
1. Jose Reyes.
2. Diving catch in centerfield off hit by Hugh Crance.
3. Lincoln; history.
4. Gum.

5. #44, Reggie Jackson.

Cameron Hook

1. Tim Linecum
2. When I hit a game-tying home run against Irell and Manella in semifinals of playoffs.
3. Andersen Elementary School; math.
4. Gum.
5. Number 23 because it’s LeBron James’ number.

Parker Reposa

1. Albert Pujols.
2. Hitting my eighth homer to beat my dad’s Little League home-run record.
3. I’m currently going to Harbor Day school, and my favorite classes are literature and history.
4. Well it depends what mood I’m in or what is handy. If there are seeds available I takes seeds and when gum is, I choose gum.
5. Number 15 because it is my favorite, and I think it’s lucky.

Max Kline

1. Jose Reyes – because he is super fast and a lead off hitter – just like me.
2. Sixth inning, up by one, 2 outs, Christian Munsen is up. He sees the pitch and he swings. It nicks the bat and flies up into the air. I am playing catcher. The ball’s about 5 feet into the air and 8 feet back. I flip off the catcher’s mask take one step back and dive for the ball. I caught the ice cream cone catch and the crowd on both benches went wild.
3. I am heading to Corona del Mar Middle School. My favorite class is PE.
4. Sunflower seeds

HOOK HURLS LIFESTYLE TO CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY

Lifestyle’s Cameron Hook came up big again with another great pitching outing when it mattered most. Hook yielded just two runs to Chamberlain over the full six innings and helped lead LC to an 8-2 win and the Newport Beach Little League 2009 Majors division Championship on Saturday at Lincoln.

LC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Cole Collins hit a lead-off double, followed by Justin Hess’ RBI double and then Hook’s RBI single.

Chamberlain clawed its way back with one run in the second and third innings to tie the game at 2. Then in the bottom of the third, Hess had another RBI double to score Collins and make the score 3-2.

Hook got stronger as the game went on, allowing no runs after the third inning. LC did add some insurance runs with two in the bottom of the fourth. Then they notched another three runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by Hook’s RBI double, Tiger Carroll’s RBI single and Clayton Johnston’s RBI double.

Chamberlain got outstanding performances from 10-year-old Harry Miller who had two terrific defensive plays at second base and scored a run; Conner Deverian, who was the starting pitcher, held LC to three runs through three innings and also had a double.

CHAMBERLAIN GROUP 7 BANDERA 3

TRUSH, MILLER PITCH CHAMBERLAIN INTO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Jack Trush pitched four shutout innings in relief, and Logan Miller limited Bandera to three runs in leading the #6-seed Chamberlain Group to a 7-3 victory Thursday night, earning a spot in the Newport Beach Little League Majors division championship at 3 p.m. Saturday against the #1-seed Lifestyle Caddy.

CG was led offensively by 10-year-old Harry Miller, who went two for three with two RBIs as well as his older brother Logan and Kevin Fults, both with multiple hits. Defensively, Ethan Wien came up big at second base, while Fults, from center field, gunned down a runner at third trying to tag.

Bandera was led by Max Kline, who started and went the maximum 85-pitches, and Sherwin Gersten, who tripled and doubled. Ryan Stone and Nick Premer also contributed with strong defensive plays from shortstop.

Saturday’s championship is a match-up of teams that played each other very tight during the regular season, with the teams splitting their two previous meetings –- both games decided by one run. The pitching matchup will likely feature recently named “Athlete of The Week” Cameron Hook for LC ,while CG probably will go with Fults, who recently pitched a complete-game, one-hitter and is peaking at the right time.

HOOK’S HOMER IN 6TH HELPS PROPEL L.C. INTO TITLE GAME

Yet another lesson in why you NEVER leave a Little League game early. On the heels of their dramatic eight-inning battle on Saturday, Lifestyle & Irell met again Tuesday in the semifinals with an equally dramatic finish.

With Irell leading 5-1 and LC coming to bat in the bottom of the sixth, Cole Collins hit a one-out single sharply to center. Brady Shockey followed by ripping a line drive off the wall that moved Collins to third. Justin Hess then singled and moved to third on a throwing error that allowed both runners to score, making it 5-3. Then Cameron Hook, on a 2-2 count, took a high fastball out deep to center for his second homerun of the year to knot the score at 5.

With two outs, Clayton Johnston singled, followed by Andrew Wysopal, who walked. After the runners moved up to second and third on a wild pitch, Colin Brandenberg hit a hard grounder up the middle that Irell shortstop Jake Hastings was able to knock down. But Brandenberg was able to leg it out, allowing the winning run to score.

Irell was led Nick Ontiveros, who pitched five strong innings, scattering five hits and allowing just one run. Austin Garrett tripled, singled and scored three runs, while Trevor Schwartz threw out a runner at first from right field as a well as having two solid plays at third.

For LC, Johnston did a solid job on the mound for 3 2/3 innings, and Hess pitched well for 2 1/3. Offensively, Shockey led LC by going 3 for 3 with a double and two singles, while Hook had the key homer and two RBIs.

The win puts LC into the Championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Thursday’s 5 p.m. matchup between Bandera and Chamberlain.

IRELL & MANELLA 2 CDM YOGURT 1

IRELL SURVIVES SCARE FROM CDM TO FORCE REMATCH AGAINST LIFESTYLE IN SEMIS

In what turned out to be a pitchers’ duel, Irell prevailed over CDM with some late-inning heroics. Kyle Martin took the hill for Yogurt to begin the game and held I & M scoreless through three innings. In the top of the fourth, Yogurt rallied as Ben Humphreys walked and Jared Eckenweiler was hit by a pitch. After third baseman Zach Fitch caught a towering pop fly to record the first out, Ben Bockrath singled to left center to score Humphreys. The next batter, Beau Roth, hit a chopper to the left of Fitch, but shortstop Jake Hastings backhanded the ball in the hole and ran down a sliding Eckenweiler at third base to make the second out. Pitcher Preston Ellis of I&M then struck out the next batter to thwart the rally. Ellis ended up pitching 4 2/3 innings, yielding the single run and striking out 10.

Ellis led off the bottom of the fifth by getting hit by a pitch from Humphreys, who came on in relief of Martin in the fourth. Nick Sperr followed and ran the count to 3-2, then proceeded to foul off three more pitches off the hard-throwing Humphreys. On the ninth pitch Sperr laced a single down the first base line, plating Ellis to knot the score at 1-1. Nick Ontiveros came on in relief of Ellis, who had reached the 85-pitch maximum limit, in the top of the fifth with two outs. Ontiveros struck out the first batter he faced to end the fifth and worked a scoreless sixth inning, recording two more strikeouts.

In the bottom of the sixth, Austin Garrett walked with one out, bringing 10-year old Koen Ebbinga to the plate. On an 0-1 count, Ebbinga laid down a perfect bunt in front of the plate. The ball was thrown past the first baseman, allowing Garrett to score from first base and giving I & M a hard-fought victory.

I & M now moves to the semi-final round at 5 p.m. today. It will be a rematch of Saturday’s extra-inning game against Lifestyle Caddy. Also in the other semi-final game, Bandera will take on Chamberlain Group at 7 p.m. tonight. Both Irell and Bandera enter the contests with one loss, so they will have to beat their respective opponent twice in a row (second game would be Thursday night) to make it into Saturday’s 3 p.m. championship game.

Thank you to the managers for their help with this recap.

CDM YOGURT 6 WEST COAST CHARTER 5 in THIRTEEN INNINGS

ECKENWEILER DELIVERS GAME WINNER IN HISTORIC NBLL GAME

Jared Eckenweiler roped a line drive down the right-field line in the bottom of 13th inning, driving in the game-winning run to end what is believed to be the longest playoff game in NBLL history. In a game that lasted nearly 4 hours, had almost 400 pitches thrown and was tied at 5 in the fifth inning, CDM avoided elimination and will now move on to play Irell at 5 p.m. today. With the loss, WCC is eliminated.

Further details are difficult to come by as both teams seemed like that had had their fill of baseball for the weekend.

LIFESTYLE CADDY 8 IRELL & MANELL 7 in EIGHT INNINGS

CARROLL’S WALK-OFF LINER SENTS LC INTO THE DRIVERS SEAT

Tiger Carroll stepped to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning with the bases loaded and one out. After intentionally walking Cameron Hook to get to Carroll, he responded with a frozen rope right down the left field line for the walk-off game winner, propelling LC into the semi-finals Tuesday night. The intense battle featured several lead changes and looked like it was finished at least four times before the final outcome.

The game had such importance that the Daily Pilot sent a reporter out to cover the battle. He had to spend a little more time than expected at Lincoln to collect his story since the first game went 13 innings and this one went eight. Here is the full story.

With the heat-break loss, Irell heads into an elimination game at 5 p.m. tonight against CDM Yogurt, where the winner will advance to the semi-finals against LC on Tuesday night.

BANDERA 11 JACK’S SURFBOARDS 7

KLINE, LEE LEAD BANDERA TO ANTOHER UPSET

Max Kline pitched a gem for four innings, allowing one run, and Alex Lee hit a three-run homer in the second, his first of the year, to help ignite #7-seed Bandera to a 9-0 lead after three innings. That proved too much of a hole for #2-seed Jack’s, despite a late-inning rally that made the final score 11-7.

Bandera was paced at the dish by Lee, who had the home run and a single with four RBIs; Stephen Von der Ahe, who had two hits and 2 RBIs as well as a clutch pitching performance as the closer; Sherwin Gersten with a base hit and two runs scored; and Clint Henderson, Teddy Somekh and Nick Premer who all provided key hits.

For Jack’s, Parker Reposa provided the pop with a solo shot, his league-leading eigth of the season, a bases-loaded double and 4 RBIs, while Cole Martin doubled and had an RBI. On defense, Jack’s turned two double plays with terrific glove-work from Jackson Rhodes, Evan Clary and Jake Giffin.

With the win, Bandera moves into the semi-finals against Chamberlain Group on Tuesday night while Jack’s get to help operate the scoreboard from here on out.

CHAMBERLAIN GROUP 2 JACK’S SURFBOARDS 1

FULTS SHUTS DOWN JACK’S AS CHAMBERLAIN CONTINUES WINNING WAYS

Kevin Fults tossed a one-hit, 75-pitch complete game gem against one of the league’s best offenses as #6 seed CG pulled off is second straight upset, having knocked off the number #3 seed Tuesday night. Coach Shawn Miller has his team peaking at exactly the right time of the year, and the win puts CG in the driver’s seat to advance to the championship game June 13.

With the lose, Jack’s moves to the losers bracket to take on Bandera at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the winner getting another shot at CG on Tuesday.

In the top of the first inning, Jack’s Cole Martin doubled to plate Parker Reposa, who had walked. That would represent the only offense for Jack’s over the next 5 2/3 innings.

In the bottom of the first, Jack Trush singled to right, but a throwing error allowed Logan Miller, aboard via walk, to score while Trush moved to third. With two outs, 10-year-old Harry Miller beat out an infield hit that scored Trush. That would be the only scoring for the rest of the contest.

The game featured some stellar defense by both clubs. Taylor Cortens with two webgems at third base and one for AJ Sanchez as well. For Jack’s, Colin Rogers came up with a huge play in the bottom of the fifth by catching a hard line-drive to right with runners on. That ended a scoring threat by CG and gave Jack’s hope coming to bat in the sixth. Reposa had a gritty performance on the hill for Jack’s, pitching five innings while yielding two hits and two runs in a losing effort.

BANDERA 5 McMONIGLE 4

LEE GOES THE DISTANCE TO LEAD BANDERA TO UPSET VICTORY

Alex Lee threw a complete game, allowing no earned runs as Bandera upset #2 seed McMonigle and staved off elimination. After a see-saw battle and the game tied 4-4 in the top of the sixth, Bandera’s Ryan Kleinman led off by drawing a walk, and following a line single up the middle by Austin Byram-Bernard, scored on a line drive to left by Max Kline.

Augie Miller led off the bottom of the sixth for McMonigle with a base hit. Lee struck out the next batter. Reed Quackenbush roped a double to the right-center field fence. Bandera centerfielder Nick Premer raced back to the wall, fired to second baseman Clint Henderson, who made a perfect relay throw to catcher Kline to nip Miller at the plate. Lee then struck out the next batter to ice the win.

For Bandera, Kline had three hits, a walk and three runs scored; Nick Premer had a single and a double; and Ryan Stone had a double and a sacrifice fly. Miller led the offense for McMonigle with two hits. Ryan Maister threw three strong innings and was relieved by Christian Munson, who went the final three innings for McMonigle.

With the win, Bandera now faces Jack’s at 1 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game for both teams. The winner will advance to the semi-finals Tuesday against Chamberlain Group.

ROSOFF PITCHES JACK’S TO PLAYOFF WIN

In the first round of the playoffs, Jack’s got a spectacular pitching performance from Robbie Rosoff, who tossed four innings of no-hit, shutout baseball to lead Jack’s to an 8- 3 win over Bandera. Connor Bock ended the game in dramatic fashion by leaping for a hard line drive, which he snared to seal the win.

At the dish, Jack’s was paced by Reposa, who went two for two with a double, a homer, two runs scored and three RBIs, while Joe Alvarado keyed a three-run rally in the fifth with an RBI single that followed singles by Colin Rogers and Zach Antosh. Cole Martin had a timely double while Bock contributed a two-out single in the sixth that led to an extra insurance run.

JACK’S SNEAKS BY CDM IN BATTLE OF HR LEADERS

Jack’s got contributions from several players to gut out a 9-8, come-from-behind win over CDM to move its record to 10-5 and into a tie for second place with Irell & Manella heading into Saturday’s decisive last day of regular season play.

CDM starter Ben Humphreys got things going first on the mound by pitching the first three innings and striking out eight while yielding only two runs. Then Humphreys crushed a first-pitch change up over the left-field wall for his sixth dinger of the year and moved into the league lead. After the top of the third, CDM was up 6 to 2.

Jack’s started its comeback by scoring two in the bottom of the third and then tied the game at 7 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth highlighted by a two-run bomb to deep center by Parker Reposa, who moved back into a tie with Humphreys for the league lead with six on the year. MAISTER AND MILLER LEAD McMONIGLE TO VICTORY

Ryan Maister and Augie Miller provided both pitching and hitting to lead McMonigle to a 10-5 win over Murray while improving the team’s record to 11-4 on the year, tied for first with Lifestyle Caddy with one game remaining before the playoffs begin next week.

Heading into the second with Murray leading 2 to 1, McMonigle put up eight runs highlighted by Maister’s ground-rule double to take a decisive 9-2 lead. On the mound, Maister pitched a strong three innings before yielding to Miller, who handled the last three and also chipped in with a double. Kellen Ochi, Christian Munson and Andy Strader provided keys hits in the victory.

MHT tried to mount a rally with runs in the third inning, scoring three to make it 9 to 5, but couldn’t quite close the gap. Offensively, Murray was led by Harry Lamb with a double, a single and an RBI; Ryan Cargile with a double; Chad Redfearn with two hits and Brett Greenlee with an RBI single. The loss moves Murray’s to a record of 7-8 on the year and into fifth place ahead of a regular season showdown against sixth-place Chamberlain on Saturday.

LIFESTYLE CADDY 5 BANDERA 4

In what is becoming a common occurrence in this league, LC pulled off the latest in last-inning heroics with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to spoil a gritty effort by Bandera, winning 5 to 4.

LC found themselves down 3-1 after three innings, but consecutive doubles by Justin Hess and Cameron Hook drove in a pair of runs to knot the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Hess and Brady Shockey turned in solid pitching performances over the first three innings, LC turned to ace Cameron Hook in the fourth to pitch the last three innings. He struck out eight batters and allowed just one hit.

In the top of the sixth inning with the score still tied, Max Kline of Bandera beat out an infield hit. Then with runners on second and third and one out, Kline advanced home on another error, taking the lead 4-3. Hook then struck out the next batter to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cole Collins beat out an infield hit with one out. Shockey then followed with a shot off the left field wall that was nearly a dramatic walk-off homer, settling for a double. Now with runners at second and third base, a wild pitch allowed Collins to tie the score 4-4, with Shockey moving to third base. Hess then was hit by the pitch and took first base. With one out, Hook was intentionally walked to load the bases. Tiger Carroll hit a chopper to shortstop Ryan Stone, who gunned the ball to home plate for the force out. However, Shockey beat the throw by inches to score the winning run.

Hook picked up his fourth consecutive victory. In the four games, Hook has pitched 21 innings (three complete games), allowing two earned runs, striking out 39 batters, while allowing an average of one walk per game and a total of 10 hits.

LC improves their record to 11-4 and plays Jacks Surfboards this Saturday at 8:30 a.m. in the last regular season game. With a victory, LC would clinch the top seed heading into the playoffs next week.

Tuesday’s match up featured two of the three teams tied for second place with 8-4 records – McMonigle and Jack’s. With the score tied at 2 in the fourth inning, McMonigle took control when Hoyt Crance singled and stole second. Augie Miller followed with an RBI double that one-hopped the wall. LIFESTYLE CADDY 15 IRELL & MANELLA 14

LS Wins a Wild One to Take Sole Possession of First Place

Last night was yet another lesson on why you MUST see the END of a Little League game to be sure of the outcome. Interestingly, this one started out as a pitchers dual between’s Irell’s Mason McLaughlin and LC’s Justin Hess, with a score of 2 to 1 after 3 innings. Then the fireworks started. While we await further details, here’s what we know so far.

LC scores 3 in the top half of the 4th, while Irell answers with 3 of their own. 5-4 LC after 4.

LC scores 4 in the top of the 5th and Irell scores 3. 9-7 LC after 5.

In the top of the sixth, LC pushes across another 6 runs to go up 15-7 going into the bottom of the inning. Remember Irell had one of the biggest comebacks in Little League history last Monday, overcoming a 12-1 deficit in the 4th to win 15-16. So this is a team that doesn’t go quietly. They almost did it again, scoring 7 runs but came up one run short and to lose 15-14.

I can only imagine how frayed nerves of all the parents and coaches were after that one! In the end it took 271 pitches, 29 runs and well over 2 hours to determine a winner and now NBLL has a new first place team – LC with a 9-3 record and alone at the top, one game ahead of three teams tied for second.

By Greg Reposa of Corona del Mar

LIFESTYLE CADDY 2 McMONIGLE 1

Two of NBLL premier pitchers, Ryan Maister (McMonigle) and Cameron Hook (LC), squared off on Saturday, and both teams did not disappoint, displaying excellent defense in backing their respective aces. Hook led LC with his second successive complete game on 76 pitches, including 10 strikeouts and no walks while Maister pitched valiantly for 4 and two-thirds innings before reaching the maximum 85 pitch count.

Lifestyle took an early lead 1-0 with a groundout scoring Nick Borquez who had tripled. Hook gave up only 3 hits, 2 by Augie Miller – his 2nd hit scoring a run for McMonigle.

After Hook retired the side in the top of the sixth inning, Reed Quackenbush took the mound for McMonigle in the bottom half. With 2 outs and runners at first and third, Cole Collins step in to the box and promptly drilled a line drive at the pitcher. Quackenbush reacted quickly to deflect the ball forward back towards home plate. With Andrew Wysopal bearing down on home plate, Quackenbush hurried to bare hand the ball right and toss it to home plate. But Wysopal’s hard slide barely beat the toss to seal the victory for LC.

Lifestyle is now tied for first place with Irell Manella, with McMonigle falling into a 3 way tie for second.

JACK’S SURFBOARDS 7 CHAMBERLAIN 2

Cole Martin and Connor Bock combined on a 1 hitter while striking out 7 and walking 6 to lead Jack’s to the victory. Offensively, Jack’s was paced by Parker Reposa, Colin Rogers and Jackson Rhodes, but the game turned in the fourth inning when Chamberlain yielded three bases-loaded walks.

Eleven year-old Connor Deverian pitched an impressive 3.1 innings for Chamberlain.

Controversy struck at a crucial point in the top of the third with the score tied at 2, Chamberlain had the bases loaded with 2 outs when a hard-hit grounder appeared to hit the runner leaving first base, which is an automatic out, ending the inning. Chamberlain made the case that the ball had hit the first baseman and then had bounced off the runner, which would have been a live ball and likely would have resulted in a run for Chamberlain and extended the inning.

With the win, Jack’s moves to 8-4 and remains tied for second while Chamberlain is now 3-8 on the year.

It’s not how you start, its how you finish.

Despite digging a 4-0 hole in the first inning, starting LC pitcher Justin Hess made the necessary adjustments and held CDM to 2 runs over the next 4 innings, giving LC a big 16-6 comeback victory in 5 innings. Led by a hitting barrage in the third inning that saw LC post 8 runs highlighted by an inside-the-park “home run” (ok maybe a single and a 3-base error but this is Little League, folks) by Cole Collins. For CDM, Ben Humphreys hit a solo homer in the 3rd, his second of the season moving him into a 3-way tie for second place in the HR Derby.

Monday night’s NB Little League Action

By Greg Reposa of Corona del Mar

West Coast Charter (WCC) vs. Irell & Manella

Yogi Berra coined the phrase, “it’s never over, ‘til it’s over” and last night’s game proved that Little League is no exception.

With WCC leading 12 to 1 going into the bottom half of the fourth, Irell came to bat needing 2 runs to avoid the 10-run mercy rule.

Well, they not only got enough runs to avoid an early end, they posted 11 runs to tie the score at 12.

WCC responded in the top half of the fifth with 3 runs but Irell matched the 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to force a 15-15 tie.

Newport Beach Little League games from Saturday May 2

Roundup by Greg Reposa of Corona del Mar

Jack’s Surfboards 7 Bandera 4

Connor Bock’s 3-run triple followed by Parker Reposa’s 2-run homer, his league-leading 5th dinger, provided all the offense Jack’s needed to defeat Bandera. The win moved Jack’s back into a 3-way tie for first place with McMonigle and Irell & Manella. On the mound, Bock started and pitched solid innings, picking up the win, while Robbie Rosoff handled middle relief and Reposa shut the door in the 6th for the save.

Irell & Manella 5 McMonigle 1

Mason McLaughlin outdueled Ryan Maister (previously undefeated) to lead Irell over McMonigle in a battle of 2 of the league’s best hurlers. The win propelled Irell into a 3-way tie for first with McMonigle and Jack’s. Nick Ontiveros hit his second homer of the season to move into a second-place tie with Konrad Lyle in the homer run derby.

Lifestyle Caddy 3 West Coast Charter 2

With the score 2 to 1 in favor of WCC in the top of the sixth and LC down to its last strike TWICE, Justin Hess and Cameron Hook each came up with clutch hits on 0-2 counts that gave LC a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. WCC started the inning in great shape getting their first 2 batter to second and third with no one out. However, Hook got the next batter to ground out then proceeded to strike out the next 2 batters to seal the comeback victory. Will Hinkleman pitched a gem for WCC in a losing effort.

Murray Home Theater 7 CDM Yogurt 4 7 innings.
