Family Bicycle Ride Meets at 5 Today

The third and final community bicycling event of the year will take place between 5 and 7 p.m. today.

The Harbor View Holiday Lights Ride will begin at the Bonita Canyon Sports Park, where free parking will be available, said organizer and bicycle advocate Frank Peters. The ride will be less than 5 miles and will be on flat terrain and easy for children and families, Peters said.

“They need to wear a helmet and must have lights on their bike, too,” an event webpage states.

The route will tour the Port Streets to avoid busier roads and will cruise the neighborhood to look at holiday lights while sharing safe riding tips. There also will be a hot chocolate station, Peters said.

The ride is the third organized by Peters and his bikeNewport Beach project. In October, Peters organized a Halloween ride, and there was a pre-Thanksgiving ride as well, drawing dozens of cyclists including city officials.

A good time was had by all. NB Bike Coordinator Brad Sommers surprised everyone with free bike lights, while I passed around candycanes. It was a balmy evening for Christmas Eve-Eve and the Port Streets are pleasantly quiet for riding while enjoying the sights. One young dad brought his 22-month old baby girl, Elle, who seemed to be having the best time. Everyone wants to do it again next year. Thanks, Amy, for your sponsorship!
