Port Theater Work Continues

port signCrews were working near the sign of The Port Theater this week — the first signs of work being done on the exterior of the historic theater since the new scaffolding went up earlier this month. Currently, the theater’s future is unclear and the owner hasn’t filed plans with the city, although he has agreed to clean up the exterior. The Port Theater opened in the 1950s, showing movies like “A Hard Day’s Night” and other mainstream films until it closed in 1998. The theater was slated for demolition, then was sold and began undergoing renovations. There has been discussion of the space being used as a restaurant or dinner theater, but the owner has been quiet and even City Hall insiders have said they don’t know what to expect.
