CdM B.I.D. Board Votes to Buy Bike Racks

The Corona del Mar Business Improvement District will spend up to $20,000 on nearly 50 bike racks that will be installed throughout the village.

The group voted unanimously at its September board meeting to allocate the funds for bike racks, as well as to notify businesses near proposed bike rack locations to make sure the racks are welcome.

“I think the program is fabulous, but I think we need to do some work,” said Bernie Svalstad, the B.I.D. chairman.

B.I.D. member Jim Walker also suggested the group ask Fire Department officials whether the proposed rack locations would interfere with firetrucks or other emergency vehicles.

In August, the group voted to support a Bike the CdM Village plan; read our story here.

That's good news. The bike racks encourage more to shop by bike. Why not? Many of CdM's most loyal customers live close enough to bike. What's been missing is bike parking. Carlsbad recently installed 100 new bike racks and now merchants are asking for more.

Only $400 per rack? I would be reluctant to entrust a $5,000 bicycle to a $400 rack. Surely there must be a high end device available which would be more appropriate in our "village" and our self regard.
