Police ID Woman Critically Injured in Bicycle-Minivan Collision

Newport Beach police continued today to investigate a traffic collision that critically injured a Laguna Beach bicyclist Tuesday afternoon on East Coast Highway just east of Newport Coast Drive.

The crash occurred about 4:27 p.m., when Debra H. Deem, 58, was riding her bicycle westbound on East Coast Highway, according to a police news release. A minivan also traveling westbound collided with the cyclist, a Newport Beach Fire Department release stated.

“Ms. Deem, who was wearing a helmet, sustained major head trauma as a result of the collision and was transported to Mission Hospital by Newport Beach Fire Department Paramedics,” the police release said. “The cause of the collision is under investigation at this time.”

Unbelievably heartbreaking news has spread that Debra passed away this afternoon. Debra was an experienced cyclist and the wife of Paul Deem, Olympic cyclist, cycling coach and owner of Cycle Werks. Anyone visiting Rose Bakery would see Paul relaxing after his rides. No words can describe my sorrow. Rest in peace Debra...
