There seems to be an influx of cows on Larkspur recently.

When John Hernandez looked out of the window after hearing a commotion around midnight, there were 40 cows on his front lawn, not to mention several onlookers. He ran downstairs and opened the front door, where he found a man from Cutestorks.com who replied, “You must be dad; it’s the first time I’ve been caught putting stuff up.” The guy then went to his car, grabbed a birthday greeting sign and handed him a 1-pound chocolate candy bar.

His daughter, Susie Garcia, of Monterrey and son, John Jr., of San Luis Obispo successfully delivered a most unusual birthday surprise that garnered the attention of many Corona del Mar passersby today. Hernandez said, “I gotta tell you it been fun and a whole lot of people know it’s my birthday. People were stopping all day taking pictures and posing.” Word spread fast, and there were 457 hits on Instagram.

John said the cow theme was connected to the next door neighbor’s cow in her front yard.

When Melinda Morgan moved in and brought Etta, the life-sized fiberglass cow, it was originally placed closer to John’s front door.

“The way it was positioned, all I could see was the udders from my front door,” he said. He asked Morgan to move the cow toward the front fence, and how she has turned out to be one of the best neighbors. His granddaughters, Presley, Cameron and Reese love to come over to see the cow.

The cow birthday surprise made for a great day, he said.

“It’s been an incredible ride.”
