Caffeine Fiends of CdM, Prepare: Starbucks to Close Several Weeks for Remodel

Corona del Mar’s Starbucks, the first Starbucks to open in Orange County, will close temporarily later this month for a remodel, store employees have said.

According to information available on the Newport Beach website, Starbucks applied in August for a permit for the remodeling work, and that permit was approved in September.

The document indicates “staff approval for determination of substantial conformance with the original use permit approval,” according to the city website. The work will remodel the existing space “to reduce the interior floor area and increase the outdoor dining patio.”

“The CdM Starbucks improvements include a slight reducing of interior square footage and expansion of the outdoor area and installation of a fire pit,” said Tara Finnigan, a city spokeswoman, in an email.

Starbucks employees have told customers that the coffee shop will close for about three weeks during construction, beginning Feb. 18.

A Starbucks corporate media representative would not confirm the construction date, or the details of the remodeling work.

“Thank you for your interest in Starbucks,” said an email from “Starbucks Press.” “We are always looking for ways to better meet the needs of our customers, and we can confirm that a remodel is planned for Corona del Mar; however, we do not have any additional information to share at this time.”

A telephone call seeking information from Starbucks media officials was not returned.

Starbucks closed its patio briefly in 2010 for a remodel; read our story here. In August 2011, a complaint led to city officials demanding Starbucks remove barstools in order to comply with a permit that limits indoor seating to 21 seats; read our story here.

Finnigan said that the city document’s reference to “substantial conformance” dealt with off-site parking.

How can Starbucks have a fire pit but the CDM bach area is outlawing them due to toxic fumes?
