Harbor View Elementary School’s longtime custodian, Scott Matthews, has been named one the district’s Classified Employees of the Year.
Matthews has worked for the Newport-Mesa Unified School District for 35 years and at Harbor View for 19 years.
“The kids here are the best I’ve ever worked with — the best,” Matthews said at a Flag Deck ceremony at the school this week. Principal Todd Schmidt announced the honor, and students cheered and clapped.
“We love you!” a few children called out.
Matthews is one of six district Classified Employees of the Year in six categories, said Laura Boss, a district spokeswoman, in an email. He was selected for the maintenance and operations category, she said.
“He is also now a nominee to be forwarded onto the county competition and possibly the state,” she wrote, adding that she was “very proud and happy for him.”
