The Corona del Mar High School PTA is seeking donations of gift cards to help a New York school devastated by Hurricane Sandy in October, according to an email.
“The CDM PTA has decided to allocate this year’s ‘community outreach’ budget of $5,000 to the William A. Morris Intermediate School in Staten Island,” said PTA President Sue Ellen O’Connor in the email blast. “As a board, we decided that reaching across the county to assist another school would be a worthy and meaningful way to appropriate our funds.”
The PTA also is collecting gift cards from Staples, Target and Walmart at the request of the principal at William A. Morris, she wrote. The CdM PTA will collect the cards at the school’s front office until Dec. 20, as well as at a PTA holiday party scheduled for Dec. 13.
The storm’s devastation forced some schools to combine and share campuses, teachers and other resources, O’Connor said.
Killybrooke Elementary School in Coast Mesa is adopting a school in New York, she said. Harbor View Elementary School also held a sock drive last month for victims of the storm.
