Corona del Mar food blogger Jenny Flake spent two years working on “The Picky Palate Cookbook,” which was published last month and already receiving rave reviews.
“It was a two-year process,” she said in a recent interview. “I did everything in our little apartment. It was quite the whirlwind.”
“The Picky Palate Cookbook” contains 138 recipes, including appetizers, breakfasts, main dishes and desserts. Since its publication on Oct. 23, the book’s received 36 reviews on Amazon, nearly all earning five stars.
“I was completely blown away with her book,” one review said. “The recipes are perfect for everyday, weeknight meals, as well as special occasions and holidays! There was so much thought put in to the layout of the book, and her notes for each recipe add such a great sense of individuality, which sets her book apart from others.”
Flake is a nationally known food writer and creator of The Picky Palate blog, which features photos, recipes and stories.
A former dental hygienist and mother of three, including a 10-week-old baby, Flake launched her cooking career on a whim when she entered her “Taco-Ranch Chicken Sandwich” in the 2004 Pillsbury Bake-Off contest.
Six months later, she learned she was the winner, and she won the contest again in 2006 as well as other contests including the Food Network’s Ultimate Recipe Showdown in seasons one and two.
Flake said she spent five hours recently in a Los Angeles studio, doing a “satellite book tour” because she couldn’t take time from her family for a regular tour. The national media attention has been exciting, she said.
“It was such hard work to do at the time,” she said. “It’s nice to see it come to life and get attention. The reward is nice.”
The big question most reporters ask is which of all the recipes is her favorite.
“That’s such a hard one,” she said. “I would say the double chocolate cupcake with creme cheese frosting. They are really soft and really chocolatey.”
