Well, if Frank and others are right, village shopkeepers should notice an increase in revenue from all the cyclists stopping to shop in their stores, just because we installed sharrows. Give me a break. This is a disaster and will cause nothing but tempers and traffic jams. Don't forget all you sharrows supporters that election day is next Wednesday!

Sharrows won't make a difference if a cyclist doesn't maintain control or rides faster than is safe.

I can appreciate the implementation of sharrows along PCH to accommodate cyclists and to provide a safer environment for their ride, but I am equally disappointed that not all riders abide by traffic laws. I am happy to share the road with cyclists but they have to be held equally accountable for their actions on the road. On numerous occasions I have observed cyclists ride through red lights or fail to stop at four way stops. If I were in a vehicle I would most certainly expect a ticket. If we are going to share the roads we all have to abide by the same rules. The police need to do a better job of enforcing traffic violations for both drivers and cyclists.

Natasha, I see hundreds of code violations by motorists every single time I'm out on the road. I'm not exaggerating in the slightest. Most of them are speeding but I see plenty of rolling stop signs and rolling right on red and not signaling turns and lane changes and tailgating and not moving as far right as practicable before a right turn and numerous other violations. Seriously. You're just looking for excuses to hate bicyclists. End of story.

Bill - I was fair in my comment and said that the police need to do a better job of enforcing traffic violations for both cyclists and motorists. I do not hate cyclists and actually ride myself, but until I feel the roads are safer for cyclists I will opt to stay away from the main roads. Motorists are far too distracted and I get equally disappointed and frustrated when I see them on cell phones. You have completely misinterpreted my initial comment - I do not hate cyclists. End of story.

Congratulations Bill. With one short note you've managed to strike a blow against cyclists everywhere by reinforcing the negative stereotypes held by many in this community. It is obvious that you didn't bother to read Natasha's comment, or at least didn't read it with any objectivity. Instead of embracing her call for more consistent enforcement of the rules of the road, something that cyclists and drivers of integrity would truly appreciate, your juvenile rant tries to justify illegal conduct under the, "well, others are doing it too" doctrine. Spoken like a true fan of Lance Armstrong. I heartily endorse Natasha's perspective. The community would benefit from the greater engagement of our police force with those who break the law - on two wheels and four - for the safety of cyclists and drivers in Newport Beach in general and CdM in particular. Best of luck Bill. Your perspective of "two wrongs make a right" is a recipe for disaster. You better hope that more drivers are like Natasha and keep a sharp eye on the road, rather than behaving with the arrogance and disdain for others displayed so publicly in your comment.

Keith, all you have done is show your own prejudice against bicyclists, the same as Natasha's. I never tried to justify any illegal behavior at all. Maybe you and Natasha should try reading what I actually wrote. I obey the rules of the road on my bike and in my car. The problem is that people like you act like bicyclists are some terrible problem when they aren't and you're grasping at straws for rationalizations for your hatred. You can say that you don't hate bicyclists but it doesn't ring true in the slightest. You can say that this is about all road users but that also does not ring true. This article had NOTHING to do with bicyclists breaking the law but the mere mention of bicyclists in the road and Natasha starts whining about bicyclists breaking the law as if it had anything to do with sharrows. Your prejudice and hate is showing. Your Armstrong comments are further proof of your hatred and prejudice. BTW, I'm not a fan of Armstrong and never particularly liked him.
