The Fire Department did a good job in rescuing the woman. It’s good to hear that marine officials were fully prepared to face such an incident.
Newport Beach Fire Department and Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol officers rescued a woman from the East Jetty off Big Corona State Beach just before 2 p.m. today.
The woman was about halfway out on the jetty rocks when she became ill, officials said. A “medical incident” caused her to fall between large jetty boulders, said Newport Beach Fire Department Division Chief Ralph Restadius in an email.
“Marine Operations responded to yells for help while Fire Department personnel were dispatched,” his email said. “Additional fire department units were requested because of the location and the operation of removing the patient from the rocks.”
The Harbor Department’s boat arrived to move the woman from the jetty because moving her along the jetty rocks was too treacherous, officials said. The boat, escorted by fire department paramedics, moved the victim to the Harbor Patrol offices on Bayside Drive, and the patient was taken to Mission Hospital, Restadius said.
Information about the victim’s condition was not available.
