Off-duty Newport Beach police officers and employees raised more than $8,700 in four hours Wednesday night in a Tip-A-Cop fundraiser to benefit the Special Olympics.

“We are so grateful to the community who came out in force to support this wonderful organization and the dedicated athletes who are a part of Special Olympics,” said Kathy Lowe, a Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman, in an email.

Police officers partnered with Special Olympics athletes and worked alongside staff at the Yard House at Fashion Island from 5 to 9 p.m. Lowe said “there was a constant stream of people coming in” to support the fundraiser, which will benefit the Special Olympics of Southern California – Orange County Region.

Jardo!! He's the top K-9 at NBPD, along with "Elko." Met both during last spring's Citizens Academy. During my graduation speech, I made sure to give a big shout-out to our four-legged officers.
