A 6-year-old boy fell almost 30 feet from the rocks at Pirates Cove at 10:12 a.m. Sunday, fire officials said.
Initial reports said the victim had fallen 100 feet, said Newport Beach Battalion Chief Todd Knipp in an email. Fire department lifeguards, firefighters and emergency medical crews, along with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Harbor Patrol, all were called to the scene.
When crews arrived, they found the 6-year-old boy at the top of a staircase leading down to the sand in the cove, Knipp said.
“Witnesses told the crews that boy had fallen off the rocks to sand below,” he said. “The fall was actually about 20 – 30 feet. The boy had no obvious injuries but was pretty scared and resistive to being treated.”
The boy was carried down the rocks to the parking lot and was taken by ambulance to Western Medical Center for evaluation. No information on the victim or his condition was released.
